In Memoriam

Walker / Jenkins Families
The Teviotdale web-site is dedicated to the memory of members of my family who endured the effects of the heredity disease, Limb Girdle Muscular Dystrophy.

To my maternal grandfather Walker, who suffered from it late in life, not knowing the nature of his disability.  Grandfather Walker died sometime during the 1940's, he was in his early seventies (70's) when he passed away.

To Grandfather Walker's daughter, my mother, Ethel Victoria Jenkins, who began to suffer from the effects of Muscular Dystrophy in her late thirties.  Ethel Jenkins found that she had increasing difficulty in walking; at the time she called it her 'Creeping Paralysis'.  Ethel lived to the age of 84; in her later years confined to a wheel chair, lovingly looked after by my sister Margaret Grace Jenkins.

To my brother, Henry Jenkins. In the case of Henry, Muscular Dystrophy began to take its toll in his late teens and early twenties. Henry emigrated to New Zealand and it was only here, and due to his increasing weakness and walking difficulty, that he was diagnosed as suffering from the rare heredity disease of Muscular Dystrophy.  It was at this time that we realised that my mother, Ethel was also suffering from the same condition.

Henry Jenkins came back to the United Kingdom in 1953 to have the diagnoses confirmed.  Henry lived to the age of seventy one, unable to cope with the condition and its complications, and with the help of his wife Sybille, they both committed suicide in 1999.

To my elder sister, Margaret Grace Jenkins, born in 1923.  Margaret began to suffer from the effects of Muscular Dystrophy in her late seventies, and until her death at the age of 89 in 2012.

In the case of my other brother, Alexander Jenkins, and myself Stuart McEwen Jenkins, we have been lucky.  However, in my case I was advised at the time of my marriage that I had a one-in-four chance of passing the disease on to any of my children.  As a result, my wife Juliet and I, decided to adopt.  We now have the most wonderful daughter, Melanie Grace Burgess who was born on 2nd August 1968.  Although grown up now and living with her husband John, we are both extremely proud of her achievements.
